Battle of the Apps: Weight Watchers toppled in high-tech download battle

A small Midlands based diet technology business, Nutracheck, has overtaken diet giants Weight Watchers in UK Apple store downloads over the past 52 weeks.

Launched in 2005, Nutracheck is already the number one selling diet App in the UK Apple Store. And now, with daily downloads ahead of the diet industry Goliath, Weight Watchers, Nutracheck is on target to continue it’s meteoric success as the diet war hots up in January – a key time for weight loss.

Said Nutracheck co-founder, Tim Vryenhoef: “This cannot be good news for Weight Watchers and other businesses in the traditional diet sector; they have been caught on the hop by a much smaller business supporting the growing demand for App and online weight loss solutions people can easily manage at home and on the go.

“We have consistently been ahead of Weight Watchers by download volumes of our UK iPhone App over the past 52 weeks, which shows how much customers are demanding easy to use technology in the battle to lose weight.

“It’s now possible to replicate the experience of a slimming club – but from the comfort of your home – with first-class customer support. We are leaving Weight Watchers standing and are delighted that a small business is now very clearly setting the pace in this highly competitive market.

“We are able to give customers exactly what they want in the technology sector they prefer – which is most definitely on mobile devices. We are making weight loss and weight management more fun, motivating and time saving by keeping pace with the enormous amount of high-tech new opportunities out there.

“We know we’re in for a pretty exciting time ahead as the latest tech developments promise a new wave of tech-enabled dieting. It’s up to us to keep weight loss ahead of the game.”

Founded by experts in the diet and technology, Nutracheck is super fast and easy to use. Add foods to the diary in just 2 clicks using the barcode scanner or use the unique search with product photos to spot what you’re eating from the 160,000 UK foods in the calorie database.

And there is a serious side to this high-tech wizardry as it is estimated that 1 in every 4 adults in the UK is obese. If this trend continues, by 2030 half of the UK could be obese, costing the NHS an extra £2 billion per year.

According to the NHS, the best way to treat obesity is to eat a healthy, reduced calorie controlled diet and to exercise regularly. So any technology that simplifies the calorie counting process should help keep burgeoning waistlines in check.
