Nutracheck Student wins Midlands Innovation Award

Local Business Nutracheck Nurtures New Talent Year In Industry Event rewards students achievements

Deja Cespedes, a student enrolled on the BSc (joint Hons) Computer Science & Management course at Nottingham University, has won the Innovation Award at the 2014 Midlands Year in Industry (YINI) Awards for a Coffee Shop Calorie Counter App she developed while working in industry at Nottingham based Nutracheck, the leading App and web based weight loss system.

Deja joined Nutracheck in June 2013 on a year’s placement via YINI which provides paid, structured, fully supported industry placements for students. During her year at Nutracheck Deja’s main project was the development of the Coffee Shop Calorie Counter App (now available free from the App store). This handy App helps consumers custom make their favourite coffee shop drink (from all the well-known high street chains and independents) and automatically calculates the calories. Deja’s biggest challenge in developing the app was learning the difference between the general development and release of an app – how people use it so differently and how vital a thorough testing phase is before an App is released.

Only 12% of the students on Deja’s university course are female, which makes her achievement even more special. The 2014 Midlands YINI Awards took place on 1st of July 2014 at Derby ipro Stadium, Pride Park. According to Deja, “It’s an amazing feeling. It was such a cool project and I worked really hard. I guess it is the just the start of me continuing to innovate and create my own apps and website. Winning this is a great feeling!”

Paul Cookson, Technical Director for Nutracheck says, “It was the first time we have taken a student under the YINI scheme. It’s been great to have Deja in the team over the past year and she has made a really valuable contribution to the business with this new App. I am delighted that her hard work has been recognised by this Award”.
